Abstract
Objectives: 1) To study the effectiveness and side effects of the Ring Pessary in treatment of genital prolaps and 2) to assess the acceptability among women using the Ring Pessary in treatment of genital prolaps at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Subjects and Method: Clinical trial without control among 30 subjects diagnosed with genital prolaps at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology from Sept. 2015 to Sept. 2016.
Results: after 6 months of use, the ICIQ-VS score for severity of vaginal symptoms decreased from 24 ± 7.7 to 0.6 ± 1.2; score for level of impact on sexual activity and quality of life declined from 43.9 ± 18.5 to 15.2 ± 6.3; and 8.4 ± 1.1 to 0.7 ± 0.9 (p<0.001); respectively. After 6 months, all (100%) are completely free of defecation and mictional disturbances. The success rate (lifting the prolaps without pain, vaginal inflammation, ulcers, no congestion or increased vaginal discharge or fibrous tissue) after 1, 3, and 6 months was 56.7%, 51.9% and 44.4%, respectively. The most common side effects were: congestion (44.4%); increased vaginal discharge (40.7%); fibrous tissue (18.5%). After 6 months, 90% want to continue, 93.3% felt satisfied or highly satisfied with the device.
Conclusion: The Ring Pessary helped significantly decrease the severity of symptoms and level of impact on sexual activity and quality of life; completely eliminate defecation and mictional disturbances. The vast majority of women accepted and was satisfied with the device.
