Abstract
Introduction: Extrauterine abdominal pregnancy is extremely rare and is frequently missed during antenatal care. This is a report of a full-term extrauterine abdominal pregnancy who had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy with secondary implantation and subsequently delivered a healthy baby
Case presentation: A 30 year-old, primigravida presented at 28 weeks gestation, abdominal pain. An abdominal ultrasound examination showed a live and active intra- abdominal foetus floating freely in the peritoneal cavity close to the maternal anterior wall, oligoamnios, the placenta was adherent to adjoining bowel loops, omentum, and on right cornu of small empty uterus. A follow-up examination at term. Our patient underwent Cesarean delivery under general anesthesia and was found to have a small uterus with the fetus lying in her abdomen and surrounded by anthick membrane. The baby was extracted uneventfully, but the placenta was implanted in the right cornu of the uterus and its separation resulted in intraoperative bleeding that necessitated blood and blood products transfusion. Both the mother and newborn were discharged home in good condition.
Conclusions: An extrauterine abdominal pregnancy secondary to a ruptured ectopic pregnancy with secondary implantation could be missed during antenatal care and continue to term with good maternal and fetal outcome.
