Abstract
Objectives: 1. To describe the characteristics of ultrasound and mammography in breast tumor 2. To determine the reliability of ultrasound, mammography and fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis of breast tumors.
Subjects and methods: The study includes 59 female patients attended the Oncology Center, Hue Central Hospital from October 2014 to September 2015, having breast tumors detected by clinical examination; mammography and ultrasound were performed and evaluated according to BIRADS. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was done under ultrasound-guidance. The patient underwent surgery and postoperative histopathological results were obtained. Recurrent tumors were excluded from study population.
Results: Sonographic fndings of breast cancers include irregularly polygon-shaped masses (26/27), irregular border and ill-defned masses (25/26), stellar margins (8/8), hypoechoic masses (34/48), heteroechoic masses (34/35), acoustic shadowing (33/33), calcifcations (20/21), vertical axis (25/27), adjacent invasion (32/32). Mammographic fndings were stellar masses (9/9), ill defned masses (17/21,) or spiculated margins (15/15), calcifcations (23/32). Sensitivity of sonography, mammography, FNAC, and those of combinations of 2 and all 3 methods were 97.5%, 97.5%, 75%, 97.5%, and 100%, respectively whereas the specifcity of these modalities were 52.6%, 47.4%, 100%, 63.2%, and 94.1%. PPVs were 81.3%, 79.6%, 100%, 84.8% and 91.1%; NPVs were 90.9%, 90.0%, 65.5%, 92.3% and 100%; and diagnostic accuracy were 83.1%, 81.4%, 83.1%, 86.4% and 96.6%.
Conclusions: Mammography, ultrasound, fne needle aspiration cytology are simple, non or less invasive methods, and at reasonable cost, which can yield high accuracy for diagnosis of breast tumors.
