Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of genital HPV and the HPV type in reproductive-age women and some relevant factors in a number of localities in Thua Thien Hue Province.

Materials and methods: Cross-sectional description on 1034 women of reproductive age in 11 communes/wards of three districts representing three geographic regions including Phu Vang district, Nam Dong district and Hue city during the duration from 03/2011 to 03/2012. Samples taken from cervical will be extracted for DNA, apply RBD realtime PCR technique to detect positive samples; this positive sample will be indentified for the HPV type by realtime PCR technique - reverse dot blot.

Results: HPV prevalence was 0.9%, in which Hue City accounted for 77.8%, Nam Dong District accounted for 22.2%. HPV positive group has old-age over 30, with average age 37.9 ± 6.2. The low-risk HPV types found are: 6, 11 and the other type. The high-risk type include: 16, 18, 33, 45, 52, and 58, in which type 16 and 58 accounted for the highest rate. In most cases only one type of HPV infection (66.7%), two type of infection was 11.1% and 3 type infection accounted for 22.2%. Correlation analysis did not identify significant differences in the characteristics of the sample between the two groups with and without HPV infection.

Conclusion: The prevalence of genital HPV in the community in reproductive age women in Thua Thien Hue is not high, mainly in urban areas, most cases with high-risk HPV. The routine HPV screening in the community should be carefully considered in prevention strategies and early detection of precancerous lesions of the cervix, and should focus only at the high-risk population.
